A Ryanair service from Barcelona to Porto on Sunday, August 10, 2025, experienced a mid-air health scare when one of the pilots temporarily lost consciousness during the journey.

The incident happened aboard a Boeing 737-800 (registration 9H-QEH), operating as flight FR 4587. At around 08:19, Portugal’s emergency medical services (INEM) were alerted after the pilot suffered what was described as a brief fainting episode (medically referred to as “rapidly recovering syncope”).

The pilot quickly regained consciousness while still airborne, and the flight continued without deviation from its planned route. The co-pilot ensured the aircraft remained under safe control, and the crew maintained normal operations.

Upon arrival at Porto’s Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport at 08:35—right on schedule—emergency teams, including firefighters from Moreira da Maia and a mobile emergency unit from Pedro Hispano Hospital, were waiting on standby. The pilot was examined on-site but declined to be taken to the hospital, choosing to remain at the airport instead.

Passengers disembarked normally, with no delays or service disruptions reported.

Airline Statement

Ryanair confirmed that its safety protocols and crew training are designed to handle situations where a pilot becomes unwell mid-flight. They emphasised that the flight landed safely and that the health episode had no impact on passenger safety.
